Introduction to Wireless Communications
Course Overview
The introduction to wireless communications course is designed to exposed students to a wide array of wireless technologies and how they operate. Special emphasis is placed on wireless local area network and cellular technology.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how the major wireless technologies are used today
- Describe the different ways in which data can be transmitted by radio waves
- Discuss the benefits of standards and list the major telecommunications standards organizations
- Explain the differences between the OSI communications model and the IEEE 802
communications standards
- Explain how Bluetooth is used and works
- Explain the background of IEEE 802.11 WLANs
- Discuss how IEEE 802.11a networks function and how they differ from IEEE 802.11b networks
- Explain how cellular telephony functions
- Discuss the issues surrounding 3G implementation
- Explain the steps needed to build a wireless infrastructure
Course Format
This 48 hour course introduces wireless networking over a range of applications, from cell phones to wireless local area networks to broadband wide area network links to satellite. Students will be able to describe wireless communication in general. The course will cover WLANs, and in particular 802.11b and 802.11a - configuration and security problems. It will present cell phone technology, including 2, 2.5, and 3 G, and examine WAP and SMS. Finally, it will examine fixed broadband wireless and satellite communications. Hands-on labs are included to enhance the students learning by reinforcing what was taught during classroom discussions.
Special Features
- Hands on labs designed to involve the participant in designing, creating, testing and troubleshooting wireless networks and components.
- Modular Textbooks for easy location of information and fact finding.
- A blended approach to learning includes classroom slideshows illustrating wireless network equipment and topology.
Benefits
- Participants gain valuable, applicable knowledge in one of the fastest growing technology markets today.
- Skills acquired can be applied at work leading to increased productivity and new levels of efficiency and understanding when dealing with wireless technology.
- Participants gain foundational understanding of wireless technologies and reliant industries such as cellular service and home networking.
